Question by damselchum: I want to start breeding dogs!!! (neonatal training and conditioning)?
Actually I was kidding about wanting to breed 
However I have suddenly become VERY interested in neonatal training and conditioning. Has anyone here had any first hand experience with it? Any one know of a breeder (other than those breeding service animals) who does this?
For those who are not familiar with what I am talking about, It’s different ways of “training” very young puppies (literally from the moment they are born) by introducing various olfactory, tactile, audio and visual stimulation in addition to socialization. Taking complete advantage of the imprinting and lowest anxiety stages in a puppies life. As well as get in on premium brain development time (puppies have 70% of adult brain mass by 6 weeks!) It can have amazing reults – puppies as young as 3-4 weeks can perform basic obedience (Sit, down) and by 6 weeks advanced moves (Open door, turn on light)
So yeah.. Anyone have more information about all this?

Just an Opinion – haven’t read the art of puppy raising. love the other skete books though – I’ll make sure I take a look at the first couple chapters next time I see it! Good luck on your new pup!
Cadsune – It’s definately the extent of the stimulation these puppies get which amazes me. I’ve raised a handful of litters (all fosters that were too far along for a spay) and my grand parents bred boxers… Always handled from birth – daily weights taken, start on traing as young as possible, etc. But i couldn’t imagine any of my pups being able to open doors and flip light switches at 6 weeks old!
Have you ever done any work on imprinting on surfaces for housebreaking?

Nancy – I actually have found information regarding the detrimental effects of overstimulation in neonates. What I’m referring to is NOT the complete removal of the puppy from the litter. All the dogs are raised by the dam with littermates, but are introduced to more stimuli faster and much younger than most puppies. I’m talking about doing TTouch on 2 day old puppies while they are being weighed. Imprinting on different surfaces by changing the whelping box, desensitizing them to strange sounds by playing audi recordings, getting them used to strange objects by opening an umbrella while sitting in the play area with pups. With ANY type of training or conditioning – yes it can be over done to adverse results. As for not having a plus – look at service dogs – they are the best adjusted domestic animals on this planet! That has just as much to do with their VERY early socialization as their advanced training.
