Archive for Australian Cattle Dog Questions

Sabersquirrel asked:

I recently (1 month) adopted an older (7+ years) dalmatian/Australian cattle dog mix. He is a great dog, but rather calm, reserved, and submissive. I’ve not had trouble crate training, house training, or basic leash training him. (Honestly it seem more like a review for him.)

I’m trying to teach him to play, but he is not interested in toys. The only toy that ever interests him are a hollow toy with food. Even then it’s only interesting when it’s something like chicken. Fetching or the take it command seem out of the question. At the dog park he’ll chase the dogs chasing balls, but has no interest in the balls. Attempting any physical play results in him standing still looking away, or retreating into his crate. He does sometimes play with other dogs at the dog park, but is bad at initiating the play. (Generally he’ll just come up to the dog, and stand there instead of doing a play bow or the like.)

PS- Squeaky toys seem to distress him as he doesn’t seem to realize the sound comes from the toy. (He hears well, but it seems like he can’t always tell where a sound comes from.) If you keep going he’ll franticly look around, and even try to dig at the carpet.

My dog is a blue healer/australian cattle dog and she is out of control! She is about 3 and a half years old and we bought her from a breeder as a pup. Her parents have great temperaments and behavior records and we don’t know why she behaves like this. We have many other pets, most of them are much smaller then she is, but she terrorizes them all! Even the geese that are bigger then her. She is well trained and she knows what she is doing. She is incredibly smart and sneaky.
We have tried loads of thing to stop this behavior but nothing is working. At the moment i am trying to walk her lots because i think it may be out of boredom but i don’t know yet if this is working. It’s not even like the animals are all free range either, she just busts all the wire and doors open to their pens. We have to leave her inside when we go out but that can often be for a whole day and she can’t help it if she needs to go to the toilet in that time…

Does anybody have any suggestions? My dad says that if she kills another pet we will re home her and if we can’t then we will put her down but I don’t want it to come to that because I still love her but it seems like nothing will stop her! And i also can’t spend loads of money on her.
Thank you for your sugestions so far but i need more help. She leaves everything alone when we tell her off but we can’t watch her all the time. We do have lives and between the 6 of us she still manages to kill our little animals :( help me more please!

Thank you all so much for your feedback everybody but as I said i can’t afford to spend loads of money on her and I believe tha it’s cruel to keep her locked up all day. She does have a great temperment (sorry for that mistake in saying that she didn’t), she is absolutely fine with people. She has never harmed any human ever! Oh and also she is not a mutt! These dogs can be called blue (or red depending on colour) heelers or australian cattle dogs. Thanks again everybody but can you please keep them coming. I need to find a solution before we have to rehome her. Doing this will put my parents off dogs for ever.

I have three cats and I had them before I got Posha (the dog). It seems like she is just REALLY jealous of the cats, whenever we cal for the cats, she comes; whenever we try to play with them she barks and scares them away; sometimes we’ll even find her stepping on them. I think she thinks she is as small as them, but shes not at all. My whole family wants to find a new home for her, but I insist we keep her, because I don’t think she really means harm.

If you know what to do, please help.
Any tips on training, or expanation or anything is great!

oh and BTW:
she is an Australian cattle dog, 4 years old, and theyve been all together for about 1 year or more.

Does a dog’s breed indicate it’s owner’s personality traits? If so, what does my Australian Cattle Dog say about me?
Pilot’s owner: I’m glad you wipe yourself.
lol
The reasons I adopted my Blue Heeler:
We bonded instantly at the shelter. He was happy to see me but wasn’t needy or overly affectionate or hyper , he didn’t pull on the lead, he came and licked my face when I called him and went right back to being independent and calm. The best thing is his love of children, he would walk through fire to be with kids and is patient and gentle (unless they run or get unruly, then he’ll pinch their ankles…which saves me the effort :) ) His coat and breath have no odor, he’s very low maintenance. He’s a constant companion, but not an “in your face” way like my black labrador.Although I’ve had to learn to manage some of the negative Heeler traits I am very fond of the breed and will never be without one as long as I have the proper home and space for one.

My 1 (and a half) year old Australian Cattle Dog has been shedding ever since October, and it just gets worse.
She is scratching A LOT and biting herself. We’ve checked for ticks in the spots she is biting and scratching, but there is no ticks.
But there IS messed up skin, which sorta makes sense, because her claws aren’t very short, so they must be scratching off skin.
Also, in certain spots (it’s starting to get all over her body) on her body, if you itch it, she’ll pick her leg up and start kicking it; which then leads to it hitting her skin; which then leads to her scratching herself harder than usual.
I was wondering; what is wrong with her?!
Thank you!

Stubs [formerly Lil Ole' Me] asked:

I am trying to move into a rental property and the landlord has deemed Rotties and Dobies as “aggressive” breeds. The only characteristic my dog has is the eyebrows and coloring, but she’s as narrow and about the same height as our neighbors black lab. She’s submissive and skittish as she was beaten before we got her (we rescued her), are there any other breeds that we can say that she is to get in? (like Australian Cattle Dog / Lab mix?) – would this be convincing?

We adopted this dog about 3 weeks ago and are not sure what breed she is. The shelter said she might be an Australian cattle dog mix, which could be true, as some of their physical traits are coming through. We also think she could be a Canaan dog based on her appearance and some of her behavior. Anyone think they might know?

Here are 3 pictures of her:

My puppy, Kai, is 7 months old and we adopted him from a shelter in Rancho Santa Fe, CA (Helen Woodward Animal Shelter). We adopted him 3 months ago. They said he was a shepherd mix, but we have gotten a mixed feedback from other people. We have heard australian shepherd, australian cattle dog, belgian malinois. He has the face of a belgain malinois or a cattle dog, and the tail of a malinois. His legs are really long and hes really skinny. When he runs, he actually jumps into the air like a gazelle. We are wondering if a greyhound may come in there? His coat is a golden brindle color. He has white socks and a white stomach with gray-ish spots Basically, we need help from any of you experts on dog breeds out there! With temperment, he is shy but playful, can be hyper but is usually calm, very stubborn, slightly destructive, loves chewing bones. Anyone have any ideas?

here are some pictures of him:
